Jeremy Hunt, Secretary of State for Health, has floated the idea that people should get permission from their GP or the 111 phone service before attending A&E. This is just a ‘toe in the water’ so far, but you have to wonder what he’s up to, given the extra work load this scheme would cause for GPs and 111 services, let alone the risk to patients denied emergency care because they don’t have the right paperwork.
