The NHS in England is being divided into 44 areas (‘footprints’) that must develop plans (Sustainability and Transformation Plans or STPs) by July 2016 to entirely change the way the NHS works. These plans must show how, within one year, each ‘footprint’ will clear its debts, debts amassed largely due to government decisions such as reduced funding, and the use of PFI. This means many hospitals and/or hospital departments will close, and NHS land will be sold off.
