Since 2011 there has been a 1% cap on public sector pay. This has resulted in a real terms drop in earnings for nursing staff in the NHS of between 9% and 14%. In May 2017, over 52,000 nurses took part in a poll by the Royal College of Nursing on what action to take on nurses’ pay. 91% said they will take part in industrial action, and 78% said they are prepared to go on strike.
