Junior doctors considering industrial action

The government is imposing a new contract on junior doctors in England. This would extend their standard working hours (i.e the hours they work before extra payment for working anti-social hours kicks in) from 60 to 90 per week. In the new contract, standard working hours would stretch up to 10pm every night of the week except Sunday. This means junior doctors will lose up to 30% of their current salary. Some doctors have calculated that if they work the hours they work now under the new contract, they will be paid at the rate of £10 per hour.  The contract will also deter doctors from training as GPs at a time when there is a critical shortage of GPs in post.
