Bursaries to be scrapped for students wanting to enter healthcare professions

George Osborne has announced that bursaries for student nurses, midwives, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, podiatrists, radiographers, dieticians, operating department practitioners and possibly paramedics will be scrapped from 2017.

In the case of nursing, a survey by Unison finds that 91% of current student nurses would not have applied to train without access to the bursary, suggesting major shortages of nurses in future:  https://www.unison.org.uk/news/press-release/2015/11/unison-survey-shows-scrapping-of-student-nurse-bursaries-will-lead-to-major-shortages/.
